December 4, 2012: More renovations are on their way on the 5th floor of Briscoe Library, including upgrades to the heating/ventilation/air-conditioning system, as well as work on the ceiling, carpeting, and painting. This conceptual mockup illustrates how the area will appear after the ceiling and carpeting changes have been made.
The 5th floor will close at 5pm on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, and will remain closed through Thursday, February 7, 2013. The Office of Undergraduate Medical Education, the History of Medicine Reading Room, and the Howe Conference Room will remain accessible, except during the Winter Break holidays.
For more information, please contact Jonquil Feldman, Director of Briscoe Library and Outreach Services, at email@example.com — or any on-call librarian at 567-2450 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
September 14, 2012: Whiteboards are being removed this morning from four group study rooms on the 5th floor (5N, 5P, 5S, 5T). After the walls are prepped, they will be painted with an innovative whiteboard paint, creating a larger than ever writing surface. The photo above shows a study room at the DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library at the University of Nevada, Reno, where they use the same kind of paint to create “whiteboard walls”.
Whiteboards are still available in other group study rooms in Briscoe Library.

September 13, 2012: One of the questions we’ve been receiving about the new furniture is this:
Since the new tables don’t have tiedown brackets, how can I use a cable lock to secure my laptop?
First of all, thanks for asking — we really encourage people to bring cable locks for their laptops when studying so they can get up and stretch, or answer a phone call, without leaving their laptops unsecured.
Our new tables are actually designed with laptop security in mind, so they don’t need additional tiedowns like the old ones did. Here are some suggestions:
- On the 5th floor carrels, look for a cutout at the back of the desk to pass your cable through, and loop your cable around the desk itself (see the right side of the photo above).
- In the individual study rooms on the 5th floor, loop your cable through the legs of the tables, which form a closed metal square.
- In the group study rooms, you can easily loop your cable around the metal plate underneath the big screen (see the left side of the photo above).
- In the new carrels on the 3rd and 4th floors, pass your cable through the gap at the back of the table and loop it around the desk.

September 10, 2012: The library computers are back up and running on the 5th floor of Briscoe Library. You’re also welcome to bring your own laptop — the individual study rooms, most of the study carrels, and a number of the study tables feature convenient power outlets. We’ve also got great coverage throughout the floor on the HSCwave wi-fi network, and a few of the study carrels have ethernet cables if you want to plug your laptop directly into a wired connection.
September 10, 2012: Now that the work on the fifth floor is mostly complete, the work turns to new study carrels on the third and fourth floors. The installation work on the fourth floor could be a bit disruptive today — both in terms of noise and in terms of walking along the south wall of the floor. Fortunately, there’s lots of nice study space on the fifth floor you can take advantage of while this is going on!
