December 15, 2011:
We will be extending 24-hour access to Briscoe Library one more night.  So for those with finals tomorrow, you’ll have one more night to cram here at the library: we will be open all night tonight (Thursday night into Friday morning), before we begin our shortened holiday hours tomorrow (Friday, December 16).
Also, just a reminder: the classrooms on the second floor of the Library and Lecture Hall Building will be closed from Saturday, December 17 through Sunday, January 8, for carpet and floor refinishing and other renovation work.

December 2, 2011: Now that the external shell has been built around the renovations area, the Library’s Systems staff has worked on getting power strips from the outlets to as many study tables as possible, because we know that power makes study space more useful for students.  We now have power strips on every study table on the fifth floor — a total of 33 study tables with power strips for you to use.  Please remember that if you study with your laptop, please bring along a security cable so that you can lock it to the handy security tie-downs on those tables in case you need to step away for a moment.  Please don’t leave valuables unattended and unlocked.  We wish you the best on exams!

Construction suspended through 12/16 for exams

December 1, 2011:

The first phase of construction has finished on the fifth floor of Briscoe Library; the containing wall for the construction area is finished and the plastic has been taken down.  With the completion of this first phase, construction is now being suspended through Friday, December 16, to allow for optimal study conditions during exams. To further enhance your exam studying, Briscoe Library will be open around the clock from December 5 through 15.  The library staff is working on increasing the number of electrical outlets that will be available at study tables around the fifth floor, and we hope to have more information for you on that tomorrow.

November 18, 2011: This week’s edition of the Office of Student Life “UTHSCSA Insider” podcast focuses on the renovations in Briscoe Library.

The Libraries on Twitter: http://twitter.com/uthsclib

Info on alternative study room locations: http://renovate-briscoe.tumblr.com/post/13128456273/where-will-i-study-for-exams

Finally, the Library staff is looking at ways that study space can be maximized following the renovation of the 5th floor.  We welcome comments on different types of study space.  In addition, the Library Committee — with representatives of both faculty and students — is brainstorming what the Library of the Future will look like, and they also welcome comments from everyone at the Health Science Center.  Read more about how to submit your suggestions at the following post on our blog: http://renovate-briscoe.tumblr.com/post/12937992517/designing-the-future

Where will I study for exams?

November 8, 2011:

Here’s the first in a series of posts to help answer your questions about the Briscoe Library Renovations. We know that students are concerned about finding a good place to study, because they have a lot of major exams coming up in December, so here’s some good news:

We have confirmed with Facilities Management that all construction on the fifth floor of Briscoe Library will be suspended from Thursday, December 1 through Friday, December 16, to ensure that students have a quiet and distraction-free library for exam preparation.  The renovation project will resume on Saturday, December 17.

In addition, there will be specific classrooms reserved for quiet study in the Academic & Administration, Dental School, and Lecture Hall Buildings throughout November & December.  We’ll be posting those locations here on the blog a week at a time (or so), but you can see the full long list right here:

Alternate Study Room Reservations: Nov-Dec 2011

And of course, remember that most classrooms on the 2nd floor of the library are open for study 24 hours a day, except when scheduled for classes; check the daily schedule hanging on the door of each room to know when it’s booked or available. The computer classroom (2.011) is available from 8am-5pm, except when scheduled for classes.

More questions?  Let us know!
